Item photos, descriptions and dietary marks

Add photos, descriptions (including "Write with AI"), veg/non-veg and other dietary marks, allergens, spice level, badges, calories and prep time to menu items.

Good photos and clear details help guests order faster and with confidence. Everything in this article is set in the item window in Menu & QR → Menu builder: click any item row to open it, make your changes, and click Save changes. Only owners and managers can edit items.

How do I add a photo to a menu item?

  1. Open the item in the menu builder.
  2. Use the image box at the top left of the item window to upload a photo of the dish.
  3. Click Save changes.

The photo shows as a thumbnail in the menu builder and on the guest menu. Items without a photo show a small crossed-out picture icon in the menu builder.

No photo? Click Generate with AI under the photo box to have AI draw one (and use Generate images to do it for many dishes at once). See AI dish photos.

Tips for good dish photos:

  • Shoot in daylight or bright, even light, from slightly above.
  • Fill the frame with the dish; square photos work best.
  • Use the same plate and background style across dishes for a neat look.

Find dishes that still need photos with the No photo filter at the top of the menu builder. The number next to it tells you how many are left.

Guests only see photos when Show dish photos is on in Menu & QR → Design & brand (Theme tab). If you turn it off, the menu becomes a text-only list. See Design and branding.

How do I write an item description, or let AI write it?

Type the description in the Description box ("What makes it delicious? Ingredients, cooking style, portion…"). Up to 500 characters. Keep it short: main ingredients, how it's cooked, portion size.

To let AI write it:

  1. Enter the item Name first. (Without a name you see "Add the item name first".)
  2. Optionally tick the dietary marks and type a few words of your own; AI uses them.
  3. Click Write with AI next to the Description label.
  4. Read the suggested text, edit it if needed, and click Save changes.

Each Write with AI click uses 1 AI credit. While it writes you can click Cancel: nothing is charged. Credits per month: Starter 100, Growth 1,000, Pro 3,000, free trial 300. They reset on the 1st of each month; add more with a credit pack or pay as you go (see AI credits). If you run out you see "You've used X of Y AI credits this month. They reset on the 1st — or add credits in Settings → Billing." If the AI call fails, the credit is given back.

If you don't see the Write with AI button, AI features are not turned on for your account; contact support.

Items without a description show "No description" in grey in the menu builder.

How do I set veg, non-veg, egg, vegan, Jain and other dietary marks?

In the item window, find Dietary & allergens ("Guests can filter your menu by these."). Click the chips to turn them on or off:

  • Veg
  • Non-veg
  • Contains egg
  • Vegan
  • Gluten free
  • Jain
  • Halal
  • Dairy free

The marks are "Shown as the veg / non-veg symbol on your menu", next to the dish name, in the menu builder, the guest menu, the POS and the cart.

Guests can filter the QR menu with these buttons: Veg, Bestsellers, Vegan, Gluten free and Jain. The Veg filter shows dishes marked Veg, Vegan or Jain that are not marked Non-veg. So mark every dish correctly, or it won't appear when a guest filters.

How do I add allergens to a menu item?

Under Dietary & allergens, the Allergens chips list the 14 major allergens: Gluten, Crustaceans, Eggs, Fish, Peanuts, Soy, Milk, Tree nuts, Celery, Mustard, Sesame, Sulphites, Lupin and Molluscs. Click each one the dish contains.

Guests see them on the dish's detail page as "Contains: Milk, Tree nuts". Allergen information matters for guest safety: check it with your kitchen, and update it whenever a recipe changes.

How do I set spice level, badges, calories and prep time?

These are in the Highlights section of the item window.

Badges: click to add highlight labels. The menu builder shows up to two on the item row.

  • Bestseller, Chef's special, New, Must try, Seasonal, Healthy
  • Dishes with Bestseller or Must try appear when guests use the Bestsellers filter.

Spice level: Not spicy, Mild 🌶, Medium 🌶🌶 or Hot 🌶🌶🌶. Chillies show next to the dish name.

Calories: the energy in kcal. Guests only see calories when Show calories is on in Design & brand.

Prep time: in minutes. Guests see it on the dish's detail page as "~15 min", which helps them plan.
