Self-order kiosk
Put a tablet at the counter where guests order and pay themselves, get a token number, and their order goes straight to your station screens.
A self-order kiosk is a tablet at your counter where guests order by themselves. It suits quick service, cafés, food courts and bars where guests order at the counter. Guests choose Eat here or Take away, tap through big category and item tiles, pay, and get a token number. The order appears on your station screens and the Takeaway board marked Kiosk, and prints like any counter order.
The kiosk is part of the Self-order kiosk module: included in Growth and above, and an add-on on Starter (Settings → Modules → Self-order kiosk → Add for ₹…/month). See Modules.
How do I set up the kiosk?
Kiosk tablets take orders while the Self-order kiosk module is on, once a staff PIN is set. Make sure the module is on in Settings → Modules, then go to Settings → Self-order kiosk.
- Set a Staff PIN (4–6 digits). Staff use it to leave kiosk mode. You need it before you can add a kiosk or use Open on this device.
- Choose Eat here and/or Take away.
- Choose how guests can pay (see below).
- Pick a Style. Match my menu design (recommended) follows your design studio: the theme, colours, fonts, corner shape and button style of your guest menu. Or choose a preset: Bar, Café, Quick service or Classic. Kiosks that had Auto before follow your menu design now. Every plan with a kiosk can do this.
- Set the timers: Start over after no touch for (the cart is cleared) and Show the token for.
- Optionally set a Schedule and the words of the Kiosk unavailable page (see below).
- Press Save kiosk settings.
How do I turn a tablet into a kiosk?
Only paired tablets can open the kiosk. Anyone else who opens the kiosk link, for example at home, only sees a pairing screen.
- On the tablet itself: sign in, open Settings → Self-order kiosk, type a name and press Open on this device. This signs that browser out of the dashboard, so nobody can reach your dashboard from the kiosk. After you leave kiosk mode with the staff PIN, you sign in again.
- With a code: press Add kiosk, here or in Settings → Devices → Self-order kiosks. A 6-digit code and the kiosk link appear. Open the link on the tablet and enter the code within 15 minutes.
A paired tablet stays paired: it keeps itself signed in for as long as it is switched on, through idle resets, refreshes and updates. Only the staff PIN (unpair) or removing it in the dashboard ends the pairing.
How many kiosk tablets can I have?
Your plan includes kiosk tablets per outlet: Free trial 2, Starter 1 (with the kiosk add-on), Growth 2, Pro 5, Custom and Licence unlimited. The allowance is shared across your active outlets (for example 3 outlets on Pro = 15 tablets), so a chain can put them where it needs them. Tablets waiting for a code and paused ones count too. You see N of M kiosk tablets in Settings → Kiosk and in Settings → Devices.
Need more? Each Extra kiosk add-on adds one tablet for ₹99 (AED 8, $2) a month. Contact us from Settings → Billing and we add it to your plan.
Pause a kiosk, or close it on a schedule
- Pause / Resume: in Settings → Kiosk → Kiosk tablets, or Settings → Devices → ⋯ → Pause. A paused tablet shows the unavailable page within a minute, clears its cart and takes no orders until you resume it. Paused kiosks show a Paused badge, not Online.
- Schedule: choose Always on, Same as outlet opening hours, or Custom hours per weekday (several ranges a day that don't overlap; overnight like 18:00–02:00 works; Open all day for 24 hours). Times use the outlet's timezone. Outside the schedule the tablet shows the unavailable page and opens again by itself. A guest already at checkout can still finish an order for 2 minutes after closing. Closed kiosks show Closed · opens … in your lists.
- Kiosk unavailable page: shown when the kiosk is paused, outside its schedule, QR ordering is paused or the module is off. Set your own headline (default We're not taking kiosk orders right now) and message (default Please order at the counter.), and choose whether to show Opens again at 8:00 AM. It uses the kiosk's look, cover and logo.
The server enforces all of this: a tablet that hasn't noticed yet is still refused when it tries to place an order.
How do I see if a kiosk is online?
Each tablet checks in every minute while its screen is on. Settings → Devices and the Kiosk tablets card show Online now, Last seen …, Waiting to be paired, Paused or Closed. A tablet also reloads itself when you change the menu or the kiosk settings (never in the middle of an order).
Tips: use the tablet in landscape, turn off auto-lock, and keep it charging. A web page can't lock the tablet's own browser controls, so lock the tablet to the browser with iPad Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility) or Android screen pinning. The kiosk goes full screen on the first tap.
How do guests pay?
- Pay at the counter: the order waits on the Takeaway & delivery board until the cashier takes the money, then goes to the stations.
- Pay by UPI on the kiosk: the kiosk shows a UPI QR for the exact amount. The guest pays and taps I've paid · Verify payment; the screen shows "Waiting for (restaurant) to confirm your payment". Staff check it in their UPI app and verify it in the Payment center or on the board; the kiosk then shows "Payment received ✓" and the order goes to the stations. Needs your UPI ID in Settings.
- Pay when collecting: the order goes straight to the stations and the guest pays at the counter later. Good for bars and regulars.
What happens after an order?
The kiosk shows the token number in huge type with what to do next, then goes back to the welcome screen on its own. The order shows on the kitchen, bar and pickup counter screens marked Kiosk, and on the order-ready TV screen when it's ready. On a Pickup counter screen, staff press Call token and then Handed over (taking any payment still due).
If nobody touches the kiosk for a while, it asks "Still ordering?" and then starts over with an empty cart.
Languages
Guests switch between English and हिन्दी on the welcome screen. Menu names show in Hindi when you've added Hindi translations (see Menu translations).
How do staff leave the kiosk?
Press and hold the logo on the kiosk for 2 seconds and enter the staff PIN. Leaving kiosk mode, unpairing and going back to the dashboard always need the PIN, and a tablet set up with Open on this device lands on the sign-in page afterwards; the browser's back button does nothing on a kiosk. Then choose Back to the kiosk, Leave kiosk mode, or Unpair this screen. To stop a tablet being a kiosk from the dashboard, remove it under Kiosk tablets; it shows the pairing screen at once.
Troubleshooting the kiosk
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The tablet shows "Set up this kiosk" | It isn't paired. Add a kiosk and enter the code, or use Open on this device. |
| "Kiosk unavailable" / "Please order at the counter" | The kiosk is paused, closed by its schedule, no staff PIN is set yet (the tablet says This kiosk isn't set up yet), or the Self-order kiosk module is off or being turned off (turn it on in Settings → Modules), no staff PIN is set, or QR ordering is paused. Kiosks pause with Pause QR ordering: switch it off in Settings → Ordering. |
| Can't add another kiosk | You've used your allowance (see above). Remove one, or ask us for Extra kiosk add-ons in Settings → Billing. |
| The code doesn't work | Codes expire after 15 minutes. Press New code. |
| Forgot the staff PIN | Set a new one in Settings → Self-order kiosk and save. |
| UPI isn't offered | Add your UPI ID in Settings → Payments. |
