Sizes, add-ons and required choices

Add sizes like Half / Full to an item, and create reusable add-on groups with minimum and maximum choices, extra prices and required selections.

Many dishes come in more than one size, or let guests pick extras like cheese, milk type or spice level. In AirQR you set these up in the Menu builder with sizes (one price per size) and modifier groups (reusable add-on lists). Only owners and managers can edit them.

How do I add sizes like Half / Full to a menu item?

Sizes (also called variants) give one dish several prices, for example Half / Full, Regular / Large, or 250 ml / 500 ml.

  1. Open Menu & QR → Menu builder and click the item (or add a new one).
  2. In the Pricing section, click Add sizes. AirQR adds two sizes to start: Regular at your current price and Large at about 1.4 times the price.
  3. Rename each size in the Size name box (for example Half and Full) and set its price.
  4. Click Add size for more sizes (up to 12). Remove one with the × (Remove size).
  5. Click Save changes.

Good to know about sizes:

  • Every size needs a name. Saving with an empty size name shows "Size name required".
  • When a dish has two or more sizes, the guest menu shows the lowest price as "from ₹…". The item row in the menu builder shows "from" and a note like "2 sizes".
  • On the dish page guests see Choose a size marked Required. The first size is pre-selected, so put the size you want as the default first; guests can switch.
  • For food cost, enter Food cost (smallest size) under the sizes.
  • Per-outlet price overrides do not work for items with sizes. See Sold out and availability.
  • To go back to a single price, remove all sizes; the single Price box returns.
  • A dish's Parcel price change is added to every size when the dish is packed, so Half and Full both cost that much more as a parcel. See Parcel pricing.
  • From a spreadsheet, sizes come in as one row per size or one price column per size (Half, Full). See Import your menu.

Drink sizes: for a drink, use the Drink sizes buttons next to Add sizes: 30 ml, 60 ml, 90 ml, Bottle, Pint and Pitcher. Each adds that size priced from the smallest size (60 ml at twice the 30 ml price, 90 ml at three times; bottle, pint and pitcher as a starting point). Check each price before saving. For liquor, also set the item's (or its category's) Tax class to your liquor VAT class — see Tax classes and liquor VAT.

What are modifier groups (add-ons) and how do I create one?

A modifier group is a reusable list of choices you can attach to any item, for example "Choose your spice level", "Extra toppings" or "Milk choice". You create the group once and use it on many items.

  1. In the menu builder, click Modifiers at the top of the page. The Modifiers & add-ons window opens.
  2. Click + New modifier group.
  3. Enter a Group name (for example Choose your spice level). Guests see this as the heading.
  4. Set Guests must choose at least and and at most (see the next section).
  5. Under Options, type each Option name and its extra price. Click Add option for more (up to 40 per group).
  6. Click Save group. You see "Modifier group saved".

The option price is added to the dish price. Leave it at 0 for free choices (like Mild / Medium / Hot). You can also enter a negative amount, for example for "No cheese".

Each option has its own switch. Turn it off when that option runs out (for example oat milk). Guests then see it greyed out with "(sold out)" and cannot pick it.

Every group in the list shows a summary such as "Required · choose 1 · used on 12 items" and its options with prices.

How do minimum and maximum choices work for add-ons?

The two numbers in a modifier group control what guests must and can pick:

  • Guests must choose at least (0 to 20): 0 makes the group optional. 1 or more makes it required, and guests can't add the dish to the cart until they choose.
  • and at most (1 to 20): the most options a guest can tick.

What guests see on the item page:

SettingLabel guests seeHow they pick
at least 0, at most 1OptionalOne choice (round buttons)
at least 0, at most 3Up to 3Tick boxes, up to 3
at least 1, at most 1Choose 1One choice, required
at least 1, at most 3Choose 1–3Tick boxes, required

When the maximum is 1, guests see round buttons and picking one replaces the other. When the maximum is more than 1, they see tick boxes and can't tick more than the maximum.

If a guest taps add without a required choice, the group's label turns red and the dish is not added until they choose.

The minimum can't be more than the maximum. If you try, you see "Minimum can't be more than maximum."

How do I attach add-on groups to a menu item?

  1. Open the item in the menu builder.
  2. Scroll to Add-ons & choices. All your modifier groups are listed as cards, each marked Required or Optional.
  3. Click a card to attach it (it gets a dark border). Click it again to remove it.
  4. Click Save changes.

An item can have up to 10 groups. The item row then shows a note such as "2 add-on groups". If you see "No modifier groups yet", create them first from Modifiers at the top of the menu builder.

Because groups are shared, editing a group (for example adding a new topping or changing a price) updates every item that uses it.

How do I edit or delete a modifier group?

Open Modifiers in the menu builder.

  • Edit: click Edit on the group, make your changes, and click Save group.
  • Delete: click the bin icon (Delete group). The confirmation tells you how many items use it; deleting removes it from all of them. You see "Modifier group deleted".

Orders already placed keep the add-ons and prices that were chosen at the time.
